In the wake of recent devastating floods that have left many Texans grappling with the aftermath, Governor Greg Abbott has announced an expansion of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to provide essential aid in the form of hot meals. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has received approval from federal authorities to extend these benefits to recipients in 26 additional counties, according to an announcement on the governor's official website.

Abbott emphasized the state's commitment to support its citizens during these trying times, stating, "As communities across the state begin to recover and rebuild from flood damage, Texas is working tirelessly to ensure that impacted Texans can feed their families," reported by the Office of the Texas Governor. Texans, whose lives have been turned upside down by the flooding, will now have access to a wider variety of food options, including ready-to-eat, hot foods at participating retailers.

HHSC Deputy Executive Commissioner Molly Regan expressed the importance of this measure, highlighting its role in the state's recovery efforts. "This will help alleviate some of the stress as Texas focuses on recovering from the floods," she told the Office of the Texas Governor. Counties like Bastrop, Bell, and Travis are among those newly eligible for the program, which enables SNAP users to purchase items such as rotisserie chicken and deli foods using their Lone Star Cards.
