In response to the escalating dangers of the Highland Fire in Crook County, Governor Tina Kotek took decisive action on July 12 by invoking the Emergency Conflagration Act, as detailed in a recent announcement. This legal move empowers the Oregon State Fire Marshal (OSFM) to mobilize a spectrum of resources to aid local firefighting units overwhelmed by the blaze's intensity.
By initiating the Emergency Conflagration Act, following a concurrence from the state fire marshal and at the request of the Crook County Fire Defense Board Chief, Governor Kotek acknowledges that the Highland Fire's threat to life, safety, and property surpasses the capacities of local agencies to combat it by themselves, so now thanks to the Act resources through the Oregon Fire Mutual Aid System can be brought into play to support on the ground operations. This is the fifth instance Governor Kotek has enacted this measure in the current wildfire season, illustrating a severe and recurring battle against nature's flames.
Amid these challenges, the OSFM swiftly deployed their Blue Incident Management Team alongside five structural task forces to the areas south of Prineville, with one task force previously sent through Immediate Response the Integrated management with the Central Oregon Type 3 Incident Management Team aim to curb the devastating impact of the Highland Fire, as reported by the Governor's office. In reinforcement, the Oregon Department of Forestry persists in its support across the firefighting spectrum with resources via mutual aid agreements.
The Crook County Sheriff's Office is playing a crucial role in coordinating evacuation procedures ensuring the community's safety, advising residents to stay vigilant and prepare for rapid movements in case of heightened risk. Further information on current evacuation levels and sign-up links for local alerts are available for the public, emphasizing an infrastructure that strives to be both reactive and preemptive in the face of fire's indiscriminate threat. Community members' adherence to these advisories is vital for minimizing harm and ensuring an organized response during these trying times.
