The escalating violence among youth in Grand Rapids has been underscored by the case of 17-year-old Cartiyae Pascal, who is to face trial for the murder of 15-year-old Amillier Penn. The incident, which took place on June 2, 2024, will be brought to the courtroom following a judge's ruling that sufficient evidence exists to move forward to trial, as reported by WOODTV.
According to FOX 17, the prosecution will seek to establish Pascal’s connection to the crime partly through witness statements claiming Pascal had admitted to the murder, and through digital evidence retrieved from Pascal's phone, including photos and videos that suggest his involvement, despite surveillance footage failing to identify him as the shooter. The defense has raised doubts about some of the witnesses' credibility, asserting they were drug users, and it criticized the police department’s appearance in a true-crime docuseries, suggesting that officers were seeking their "15 minutes of fame."
As the community and Pascal's legal team prepare for the preliminary hearing set for today, additional details of the teens' turbulent history have surfaced. WZZM 13 reported previous physical altercations between Pascal and Penn, which were captured on video, only to be eclipsed by the fatal encounter that occurred while Penn was engaged in an innocent game of football with friends.
