A 62-year-old man, identified as John Plekker of Greenville, drowned in Wabasis Lake in Oakfield Township this past Sunday. Plekker reportedly jumped off a pontoon boat into the water around 6:30 p.m. and did not resurface, instigating a search by his family and other boaters in the vicinity before the authorities arrived, as reported by MLive.
Despite the immediate efforts to locate Plekker, the search was paused at 10 p.m. due to darkness and resumed the next morning. According to a statement procured by WZZM13, his body was eventually discovered 22 feet underwater yesterday. Plekker, an avid boater, was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident, a choice that reminds us of the undiscriminating threat that water poses to all.
The Kent County Sheriff's Office, following the discovery, reiterated the importance of water safety ahead of the upcoming Fourth of July holiday. "It doesn't matter how old you are. If you're a good swimmer, all it takes is one, one bad thing to happen and you can go down," Sergeant Scott Dietrich expressed in an interview captured by FOX17.
The ongoing investigation, pending an autopsy, has led authorities to believe there was no foul play involved in Plekker's drowning. In remarks from Sergeant Dietrich, from an article by WZZM13, the sentiment was somber. "Condolences to the family and friends," he said. "It's a terrible situation and we're glad we can bring closure to them, but we're just upset that it had to be this way."
