Hikers and bikers planning to use the Hank Aaron State Trail should prepare for a temporary detour. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), in coordination with Wisconsin State Fair Park officials, has announced the closure of a section of the trail during the upcoming State Fair. The portion between S. 76th St. and S. 84th St. will be closed from Thursday through August 10, aligning with the fair’s scheduled dates.

The closure is being implemented as a safety measure, which has been a recurring focus for fair organizers. With large crowds expected, the trail’s route through the fairgrounds presents a potential security concern, as it passes directly above areas occupied by vendors and attendees. "While we understand the challenges this causes for trail users, I believe this is a necessary security measure that will help to ensure the safety of our fairgoers, exhibitors, vendors, operators and staff," said John Yingling, Chairman of the Wisconsin State Fair Park Board of Directors, in a statement provided to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

To accommodate trail users during the closure, alternate routes have been designated. Marked detours will be available to guide pedestrians and cyclists through the area, though the revised paths may extend travel distances. Signage will be placed in advance of the closure to inform users and help prevent unexpected disruptions to their usual routes.

To support cyclists heading to the fair, State Fair Park staff are implementing new infrastructure improvements. Additional bike lane striping is being added along North Street (Adler) to accommodate bicycle traffic, enhancing safety for riders traveling between the State Fair Park North Parking Lot and the UScellular Main Entrance. Further information, including specific details on this year’s arrangements, is available on the State Fair's official website.

Individuals with questions or concerns can contact the State Fair Park Police at 414-519-7324. The public is encouraged to use this number for inquiries related to detour routes or to provide feedback during the closure period.
