
The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced ongoing work on the Joseph P. Leong Highway and Kamehameha Highway Rehabilitation project, covering the stretch from Waimea Bay Beach Park to the ʻŌpaeʻula Stream Bridge. The project aims to improve the experience for motorists traveling this section of road. As the infrastructure work continues, HDOT outlined the areas currently undergoing improvements, noting that crews are finishing the repaving of Joseph P. Leong Highway from the Helemano Uka Stream Bridge to the Hale‘iwa Town intersection with Kamehameha Highway, HDOT reported.
In an effort to boost efficiency as the project proceeds, the HDOT announced an adjustment to work hours starting July 7, with operations commencing earlier, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, next on the schedule is targeting areas from the Hale‘iwa Town intersection towards Laniakea Beach Park, focusing on repaving given favorable weather conditions, however, they are prepared to reassess and suspend daytime work if it results in significant traffic disruptions the work may shift to night hours when necessary.
Adhering to a timeline that anticipates completion in December 2025, the HDOT continues to prioritize the rehabilitation project while remaining vigilant to the unpredictable nature of weather that could potentially alter the course. Motorists are advised by HDOT to practice caution during commutes, observe traffic signs and barriers vigilantly, and pre-plan road travels to circumvent worksites where special duty police officers will be facilitating safety operations.
