Details have emerged in the investigation of a fatal shooting by Houston police at a residence in the city. The incident occurred at 1652 West 13th Street yesterday morning. An officer fatally shot an armed female suspect, whose identity has yet to be officially confirmed by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. The officer involved, HPD Officer T. Dupuy, was unharmed during the event, according to an official statement on the City of Houston's News website.
The sequence of events began Tuesday evening when HPD patrol officers were called to a disturbance at the address. CenterPoint Energy workers were allegedly harassed by the suspect while attending to a reported gas leak. Officers unsuccessfully attempted to make contact with the suspect, who had barricaded herself within the home and was observed wearing body armor and brandishing a handgun, as per the same City of Houston's News report. The situation escalated when the suspect reportedly retrieved a rifle, chambered a round, and aimed it at officers on the scene.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was quickly involved, and an arrest warrant for aggravated assault against a peace officer was obtained. The situation continued to remain tense as HPD SWAT and Hostage Negotiation teams arrived to negotiate. Despite their efforts, the standoff ended when the suspect pointed her rifle at the officers, which led Officer Dupuy to fire his weapon in response, ultimately striking the suspect. The Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the suspect dead at the scene.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Detectives H. Le and C. Walker are among those leading the investigation into the shooting, as per HPD policy for such incidents within city limits. The Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office are also conducting investigations to thoroughly review and evaluate the officers' actions during the incident.
