In what began as an ordinary purchase of an abandoned storage locker, a grisly discovery was made at 2640 W. 6th St in The Dalles when the new owner came across a container filled with potential human remains. According to a press release from the City of The Dalles Police Department, the incident was reported to officials at approximately 9:39 am on July 29, 2025. As per Chief Tom M. Worthy, an investigation is underway by the Columbia Gorge Major Crimes team following the consultation with the Wasco County District Attorney and the issuing of a search warrant.
Officers from The Dalles Police Department promptly responded and secured the crime scene, making it known that the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the remains warranted a full-blown investigation. Aided by several other law enforcement agencies, including the Oregon State Police Crime Laboratory response team, detectives executed the search warrant by late afternoon. Recovering the remains came as a call-out investigatory effort from the Mid-Columbia Major Crimes Team, which includes representatives from various county sheriff’s departments and the Oregon State Police.
The identity of the deceased, as well as the circumstances leading up to their demise, remain unknown pending an autopsy by the State Medical Examiner. "Every available resource is being brought to bear to investigate this potential crime and I have every confidence in the abilities or our Detectives and our partner agencies assisting us in this investigation," said Chief Worthy in the released statement. Nevertheless, authorities are warning against idle speculation and ensuring the public that more information will be released as the investigation allows.
In the meantime, the community is expected to be kept abreast of any developments, as the investigation continues into the exact nature of this morbid finding. Calling the storage locker had been purchased by an unwitting buyer looking for forgotten treasures, the incident has rather unearthed a mystery that has piqued the concern and curiosity of The Dalles residents. Official information said Chief Worthy in the press release, "TDPD cautions against speculation or any conclusions based on the information released here." The investigation is currently considered active and ongoing.
