The Illinois Department of Labor's (IDOL) Division of Occupational Safety and Health (IL OSHA) has collaborated with the Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) to release a pivotal online training program for firefighters. This initiative, dubbed "Defenses for Firefighters," presents an innovative approach to fostering a safety-forward mindset while maintaining operational prowess during emergencies. The digital course, with advice rooted in the somber realities of firefighting, is tailored for both green and seasoned fire service members.
With the goal of marrying safety protocols with effective emergency responses, the new course spans a mere fifteen minutes and covers a swath of critical principles. IL OSHA Chief, Erik Kambarian, expressed the value of this program, stating, "The entire course takes only fifteen minutes. I would encourage all fire departments in Illinois to put their staff through it and then continually reinforce the principles." "The goal is clear: ensure every firefighter can walk away from a bad day," he told Illinois.gov.
Participants of the course are exposed to various safety measures such as the importance of seatbelt use, staying vigilant and visible at traffic scenes, and the necessity of team-based operations – entering, staying, and exiting together. These principles come with the overarching message that a risk-aware mindset is imperative: evaluate situations, adhere to standard operating procedures, and communicate effectively when things don't align.
IL OSHA and the IFSI encourage firefighters to engage with this online resource, available via the IFSI training platform, to strengthen their defensive strategies against the myriad risks they confront. Federal OSHA, part of the U.S. Department of Labor, shares the mantle with IL OSHA, a Division already dedicated to the welfare of state and local government employees, in executing health standards and occupational safety across Illinois.
About IL OSHA and IFSI: Situated within the Illinois Department of Labor, IL OSHA champions the protection of public employees through its educational, training, and regulatory programs. The Illinois Fire Service Institute, housed at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, furthers this mission by providing rigorous, research-backed training to the state's firefighters and responders.
