A 29-year-old woman, Courtney Hershberger, was found dead in Niles Township, and a 33-year-old man from Indiana has been arrested in connection with the incident, authorities reported. The Berrien County Sheriff's Office informed media outlets, including WOODTV, that deputies were dispatched to the Franklin Woods mobile home community on 13th Street around 1 p.m. last Monday, where the victim was discovered.
Details regarding the circumstances of the death were deemed suspicious. According to information obtained by WWMT, investigators believe her death was not a random act of violence. The suspect, whose relationship with Hershberger was confirmed, is currently held in Berrien County Jail on open murder and weapons charges. His name has been withheld pending his arraignment, which is expected to occur this afternoon.
The Berrien County Sheriff's Office has not released many details, but preliminary autopsy results shared by WNDU confirmed that Hershberger died from a gunshot. The report by WNDU also mentioned that the suspect and victim were involved in a relationship, corroborating earlier information released by other outlets. This personal connection may play a role in the ongoing investigation. Authorities have urged anyone with information regarding the case to come forward and assist in the investigation.
