An incident in Garland last Thursday afternoon resulted in a yet-to-be-identified man's death, following a physical altercation with police officers after reports of the man's erratic behavior had triggered a response to the scene, as stated in a post by the Garland Police Department.
The dispatch came after multiple citizens called 9-1-1 to report an adult male—a nude man—acting out in a public setting outside a restaurant on the 1300 block of Marketplace Drive; subsequently, officers arriving at the site attempted to engage with him verbally however the man did not cooperate, it turned into a physical skirmish when the police tried to detain him, at which point, according to the police post, he "began fighting and speaking incoherently." There were no immediate signs suggesting the reason behind the man's actions or his state of undress.
Following the altercation, the man experienced what has been described as a "medical emergency," which saw the intervention of Garland Fire Department paramedics, who administered care before transporting him to a nearby hospital. The incident's aftermath has raised concern and prompted an ongoing independent investigation to ascertain the events that led to his death, which was confirmed by hospital staff the next day, sometime after 1:00 p.m.
As the investigation unfolds, and with details still scarce, the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office is poised to conduct a thorough examination to determine the official cause of death; the deceased's identity awaits its release during this sensitive time, this follows an established protocol that typically precedes the public dissemination of such information, especially in cases involving incidents with law enforcement.
