Irvine police have taken a man into custody following reports of a suspected hate-motivated road rage incident. According to a KTLA release, 54-year-old Robert Leon Tackett of Irvine was arrested after allegedly targeting a Hispanic driver with racial slurs and physical aggression on the morning of July 22. The confrontation took place on Sand Canyon Avenue near Interstate 5. The police department believes there may be additional victims linked to Tackett.
The Irvine Police Department detailed that the incident began when Tackett was heard yelling at a Hispanic truck driver, and then followed the victim's car, swerving aggressively into their lane to nearly cause multiple collisions. As reported by CBS Los Angeles, "Tackett shouted racial slurs at the victim before throwing a cup of hot coffee into the victim’s vehicle." The victim managed to capture much of the harrowing ordeal on video.
The event resulted in coffee burning the victim's face, hands, and staining the car's interior. This was consequently shared on social media by a relative of the victim, which aided in reporting the assault to the authorities. Tackett was arrested by Irvine police on July 24 at around 2:30 p.m and is currently facing charges for a hate crime and aggravated assault.
The Irvine Police Department is urging anyone with further information or additional footage of the confrontation to quickly reach out. An officer statement on their official Instagram post stated, "Detectives ask other victims, witnesses, or anyone with additional footage of the incident to contact: [email protected]." The police suggest that further evidence could aid in fully comprehending the entirety of this event's impact. Viewers can see the Irvine PD Instagram post for updates and contact information.
