A tragic incident unfolded on Jacksonville's Westside, as a motorcyclist in his mid-30s was killed in a collision with an SUV yesterday afternoon. According to First Coast News, the motorcyclist was riding westbound on Collins Road when the crash occurred at around 4 p.m. The woman driving the SUV was attempting to turn eastbound onto the same road and pulled in front of the motorcyclist, leading to the fatal crash.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) is investigating the crash, particularly looking into speed as a possible factor. Riding without a helmet, the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman was hospitalized in critical condition, Action News Jax reported. This marks the city's 90th roadway death this year, and the 22nd involving a motorcycle, an increase of three from the previous year.
Sgt. Hungerford of JSO was quoted by First Coast News, stating the significance of motorcycle fatalities and urging riders to be vigilant. Hungerford also recommended the S.M.A.R.T. Motorcycle Safety Course, available for free on the JSO website, to help riders learn crucial techniques for avoiding crashes.
Reflecting on the circumstances that lead to such accidents, Sgt. Hungerford told First Coast News that, "Many times, the cause of the accident is not the motorcyclist."
Adding to the narrative of the incident, News4Jax described the crash as causing the SUV to flip over, which brought Collins Road to a close for several hours while the authorities conducted their investigation.
As the community grapples with this loss, which is part of a concerning trend of motorcycle-related fatalities, JSO continues its investigation to determine any charges related to the collision.
