A police officer was wounded, and a suspect died following an officer-involved shooting in Jacksonville's northwest area. The incident occurred at the corner of Norfolk Boulevard and Soutel Drive in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has reported.
According to the official account by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the suspect, believed to be around 20 years old, was reportedly seen surveying a business on Soutel Drive before it opened. Alarmed witnesses claimed the individual looked to be assessing the business for a potential crime. Later, at the moment the business began to welcome customers, the suspect entered and issued a threatening demand to the cashier. A customer inside managed to alert the police and provided a description of the man.
Officer Luis Mercado, responding to the call, spotted an individual matching the description exiting the area. A foot chase ensued when the suspect refused to comply with Mercado's repeated commands to halt and lie on the ground. Upon catching up to the suspect, a struggle took place, leading to a violent confrontation. While being handcuffed, the suspect turned and fired two shots, one striking Officer Mercado in the leg. Mercado, wounded, discharged his weapon, hitting the suspect.
The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department swiftly transported both the officer and the suspect to a local hospital. While Officer Mercado is reported to be in recovery, the suspect's wounds were fatal. "The State Attorney’s Office is currently investigating this incident," the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office indicated.
