A recent court verdict has charged Jaron Sims, 37, with multiple offenses, including second-degree murder, following a reckless street racing incident that resulted in a fatal crash. According to the Circuit Attorney's Office, the jury delivered their verdict on Wednesday after a trial spanning three days during which Sims opted to represent himself.
The incident, which took place on July 8, 2022, witnessed Sims participating in a high-speed race along St. Louis Avenue. After running a red light at North 20th Street, Sims collided with the vehicle of Adrianne Holloway, 63, carrying a two-year-old and the child's father, aged 40. While presenting serious injuries, transported to the hospital, Holloway succumbed to her injuries three days following the crash. Her grandchild, the two-year-old, also sustained serious injuries due to the collision.
Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore highlighted the recklessness of Sims' actions, stating, "The defendant’s decision to recklessly race on public streets turned the public roads into a danger zone and had devastating consequences for innocent victims." The harsh consequences of Sims' reckless driving were underscored by the Attorney's commitment to bring to account those who shatter lives with reckless behavior, as per the Circuit Attorney's Office.
Having a background marred with previous felony convictions, Sims' rap sheet includes assault, robbery, and unlawful use of a weapon charges. Awaiting trial in the murder case, Sims found himself facing additional charges for an alleged assault on a corrections officer while in custody. Scheduled for October 9, Sims's sentencing promises to be a culmination of his continuing disregard for the law.
