After a prolonged tenure on the bench, Judge Mike Spitzer of the 32nd Judicial District Circuit Court has decided to step down. Over the course of his career, he established a record of service focused on legal developments and community initiatives. Although he initially approached his judicial role with some hesitation, Judge Spitzer went on to serve steadily within the legal system of his jurisdiction.
Appointed to the 21st Judicial District, the Judge was tasked with serving Williamson, Hickman, Lewis, and Perry counties. As population growth in Williamson County continued, the demands on the district increased. Coordination with legislators led to the formation of the 32nd Judicial District—the first new district established in 45 years—with Judge Spitzer named as its presiding judge, according to the Tennessee Courts.
Throughout his term as judge, Spitzer noted the personal connections formed within the community. His responsibilities included participation in the drug court program, which offered structured support to individuals in the justice system. In one account shared by Judge Spitzer, a program graduate stated, "I’m here because of you," referring to their experience in the program, as he was quoted saying in the press release.
Looking beyond retirement, Judge Spitzer has continued work aimed at supporting families involved in the legal system. He developed a curriculum called Parent Enrichment Gold Star Parents, designed to address issues proactively by strengthening parenting skills and family stability. He plans to present this curriculum at an upcoming conference, with the intention of sharing it with other professionals in the field and encouraging broader use across the state to help reduce adverse childhood experiences and their long-term effects.
In his parting message to his successor, Judge Spitzer outlined a list of virtues: compassion, dignity, even-temperedness, forgiveness, gratitude, humility, integrity, justice, kindness, and love. He noted that applying these principles daily is important for judges. After concluding his judicial duties, Spitzer plans to spend time with his wife, Dana, and attend to personal projects.
