Starting on July 28, Kūhiō Highway will be fully closed at night between Hanalei Plantation Road and ʻŌhiki Road for repairs. According to the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation, the closure will take place on weeknights from 11 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. through September 15.
The closures are for pavement reconstruction on Hanalei Hill, as reported by the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation. Once completed, additional work will include drainage, guardrails, plantings, and striping. On weekends, a single lane will be closed from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. to allow traffic to continue moving.
Emergency services will have access through the Hanalei Hill work zone, and flaggers will manage traffic at both ends of the project. Electronic message boards will provide updates, and travelers can check the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation website for lane closure information. The stabilization work, including the Waikoko slope, is expected to be completed by November 2025.
