Residents and visitors in Kaua‘i are advised of an emergency preparedness exercise on Thursday. The exercise involves multiple agencies and emergency responders. It is a joint effort between the County of Kaua‘i and the Hawai‘i National Guard’s 93rd Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team. The focus will be on readiness for hazardous material incidents and possible natural or man-made disasters, as reported by the County of Kauai.
A day-long training event will take place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Nāwiliwili Harbor, as announced by Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami. According to the County of Kauai, Mayor Kawakami said, “This kind of training brings our teams together under realistic conditions so we can strengthen the partnerships and protocols that protect our community.” The exercise is designed to improve coordination between the Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency, Kaua‘i Fire Department, Kaua‘i Police Department, and the U.S. Coast Guard.
From July 20 to July 25, emergency response training will take place at Nāwiliwili Harbor and other sites, including Kaiākea Fire Station, the U.S. Coast Guard Station, and the Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency’s Emergency Operations Center. The exercises will cover hazardous materials decontamination, triage, communications, and emergency coordination. People are asked to stay aware around training areas, especially near Nāwiliwili Harbor. KEMA Administrator Elton Ushio said, “These exercises give our responders an opportunity to sharpen critical skills and improve coordination across agencies.” For details, contact Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency at 808-241-1800, as stated by the County of Kauai.
