An unexpected discovery has spurred the MSU Surplus Store to issue a public safety plea after a recent event. The store, known for its eclectic mix of university-related surplus items, unintentionally distributed pens that concealed a hidden knife feature during a July 8th sale aimed at teachers.
According to a social media post from the MSU Surplus Store, staff members were unaware that among the free pens offered, a few contained a hidden blade. While the exact number of these pens is unclear, the post implores those who attended the sale to check the items they collected. "During our Teacher Sale on Tuesday, July 8 we had a box of free pens available," the Facebook post detailed. "We discovered after the event that there were a handful of pens with hidden knives in them."
The pens in question have a dual purpose, equipped with a functioning flashlight on one end and a working pen on the other. Unknown to the shoppers and staff during the distribution, the pens separate in the middle to reveal the knife blade buried within. The incident caught the attention of the Lansing State Journal, which reported no immediate comment from store managers after their inquiry about the concerning oversight.
