Residents of Knoxville and its Burlington neighborhood will soon gather to mark a significant moment in the area's development with the groundbreaking for a new fire station set for July 31 at 4017 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. As reported by the City of Knoxville's official news announcement, the event, starting at 9 a.m., is open to the public, with city leaders and community stakeholders in attendance.
The new Fire Station No. 6, replacing its 88-year-old predecessor, will be Knoxville's first in almost three decades, and the city expresses this as a reinvestment in local infrastructure and safety. According to the announcement, Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon, Knoxville Fire Chief Stan Sharp, and representatives from various city departments and the construction company will be present to celebrate the $8.6 million facility, which boasts two bays for fire apparatus, a training mezzanine, and a host of modern amenities for firefighters including a kitchen and dining area, a day room, and a patio.
In tandem with the fire hall, the Burlington Streetscapes Project is expected to commence enhancing the vicinity. Slated for $5.1 million, the project will overhaul sidewalks, update traffic signals, signage, and streetlights, and improve parking as well as relocate overhead utility lines. Through this dual endeavor, which represents a combined $13.7 million investment, the city aims to rejuvenate Burlington’s streets and public safety infrastructure.
