As Lake Michigan faces tumultuous conditions, the National Weather Service has issued a warning across several states outlining the potential hazards for swimmers and boaters. According to NBC Chicago, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan beaches are expected to experience waves that could crest as high as seven feet due to winds blowing up to 20 miles per hour. Due to the severe risk posed, nearly two dozen Chicago beaches saw prohibitions against swimming on Thursday.

Compounding the danger, after severe thunderstorms passed through the Chicago area, residents are now contending with the aftermath, which includes downed trees and power outages. The weather continues to be temperamental, as the same low-pressure system is responsible for bringing both oppressive humidity and a swift turnaround to milder, spring-like temperatures. "Stay out of the water today and tomorrow," urged NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman, in light of the high swim risk and the presence of life-threatening currents.

Heading over to West Michigan, the situation is equally unsettling. A Beach Hazards Statement has been put forth for several lakeshore communities, per WZZM 13. Strong north-northwesterly winds could whip up waves reaching up to eight feet, expected to persist throughout the day and gradually subsiding overnight. Despite winds diminishing in strength later in the day, the waves stay high through this evening, indicating that the hazard will not wane with the weakening winds.

With plans to visit the pier, individuals should be cautious due to the possibility of being swept away. It's been highlighted that the northern sides of piers will be particularly perilous and should be avoided, as concern mounts over the risk posed by structural currents in addition to this. For those caught in a rip current, the advice is clear: "swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current, and then back toward land." Nevertheless, with temperatures forecast to hover in the low to mid 70s, lake-goers may find the cooler air less than inviting for a day at the beach.

While today might not present the ideal beach day, conditions are expected to improve in the coming days, with a calmer aquatic forecast on the horizon. Waves are anticipated to stay below 1 foot as reported by WZZM 13, which could make for more favorable swimming circumstances. Until then, beachgoers throughout the Lake Michigan shoreline are advised to exercise caution and stay informed of updates on swimming conditions.
