Early morning commuters faced significant delays after a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 485 near Ballantyne, but lanes have since reopened. As reported by QC News, the collision occurred just before 6 a.m. today on I-485 inner near the Johnston Road exit, requiring emergency services to close all three inbound lanes to manage the scene and transport one individual with severe injuries to Atrium Carolinas Medical Center.
Initial estimations suggested a prolonged closure of the highway with the North Carolina Department of Transportation predicting a reopening time near mid-morning; however, the lanes were cleared and traffic was restored by 8:30 a.m., as noted by WBTV. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, and while at least two vehicles were visibly damaged in the incident, authorities have not provided any further details regarding the events leading up to the crash or whether any additional individuals were impacted.
The swift clearance of the accident helped to mitigate what could have been extended traffic complications for Charlotte area drivers. During the roadblock, officials recommended alternate routes, suggesting drivers use Rea Road or Providence Road to connect to Highway 51, which was a slight detour to help them maneuver around the congested area, as detailed by WCNC.
