The City of Portland has officially announced that the new chief of Portland Fire & Rescue will be Lauren Johnson, who is making the transition from her current position as an assistant fire chief at the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department, a role she has held for the last 26 years, according to a recent post on the city's official website.
Set to start on August 18, Johnson brings a wealth of experience to the bureau, and she expressed her anticipation for the role. "It is truly an honor to be named the next Chief of Portland Fire & Rescue," Johnson said. "I’m eager to collaborate with the dedicated team of City staff and elected officials who are passionate about shaping the future of public safety in Portland," she added in a statement released by the City of Portland. Mayor Keith Wilson also expressed confidence in her capabilities, saying, "Chief Johnson’s deep experience and thoughtful leadership will be a strong addition to Portland Fire & Rescue. I look forward to working alongside her as we continue building a safer, more connected city for all Portlanders."
In preparation for her upcoming role, Interim Chief AJ Jackson will serve alongside Johnson over the next two months to ensure a smooth handover. Johnson will soon oversee the bureau's 744 employees and manage its nearly $200 million annual budget, reporting directly to Interim Deputy City Administrator for Public Safety Bob Cozzie; she also plans to graduate with her Masters in Public Service Administration in December of this year.
Johnson’s focus will be on familiarizing herself with the department's operations and forging strong connections within the community. "My immediate focus will be immersing myself in the department’s operations, understanding current concerns, and most importantly, getting to know the members of the department who serve the City of Portland every day," Johnson said. "I look forward to working closely with community leaders, local organizations, and Portlanders to strengthen partnerships and create an even safer city for everyone," as reported by the City of Portland. Beyond her professional commitments Johnson and her family are also eager to explore Portland's stunning natural landscapes and its vibrant cultural offerings.
