In a tragic incident, a woman from Ligonier lost her life at Renzie Park in McKeesport after a tree branch suddenly fell on her. As reported by WPXI, Gendie Miller, 49, was at the park last Wednesday while her daughter, Marlee, participated in the Western PA College Showcase softball camp. "It's such a crazy, freak accident," said Luka Bompiani, a family friend, emphasizing the unsettling quiet of both weather and wind at the time of the incident.
Gendie and her husband Bill were spectating their daughter's athletic dedication, settled under the tree's canopy, seeking solace from the blistering 90-degree heat. According to Bompiani, the foliage above crackled, claiming Gendie's life despite Bill's desperate attempt to reach safety. The plummeting bough clipped him, but Gendie bore the fatal blow.
McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko expressed his condolences, stating, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time. An evening that started like any other, with families and friends gathered in the park for a game, has ended in tragedy after this horrible accident," according to WTAE.
To support the family, a fellow coach has set up a GoFundMe campaign and has already raised more than $18,000 in donations. The organizers of the fundraiser urge the community to stand behind the Millers, as Marlee faces her junior year of high school under the weight of her mother's absence.
