A grim holiday tragedy unfolded in Lilburn, as Martin Montiel-Moreno, a local resident, has been charged with the murder of his roommate, Jorge De La Cruz, following a violent incident on the Fourth of July. According to FOX 5, Gwinnett County Police were called to the 4000 block of Comanche Court after an assault report. There, they discovered De La Cruz with a critical head injury, which he unfortunately did not survive.

Emergency responders transported De La Cruz to a local hospital in what was described as critical condition. "What we do know is that the victim was struck with a sledgehammer at least more than one time," Gwinnett County Police Corporal Juan Madiedo stated, as per the report by FOX 5. Scrutiny intensified as Montiel-Moreno turned himself in to a Forsyth County deputy, claiming to have committed a heinous crime.

The assailant was taken into custody and interrogated by investigators. During the questioning, Montiel-Moreno reportedly confessed to the sledgehammer attack on his roommate, Channel 2's Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Matt Johnson learned from authorities. Initial charges of aggravated battery and aggravated assault were filed against Montiel-Moreno, which escalated to include felony and malice murder charges following the death of De La Cruz on Sunday.

Residents like Jackie Prather expressed their distress, "That’s pretty bad," Prather told Channel 2. The motive behind the fatal assault remains unclear, while investigators are actively seeking information. The police are urging anyone with pertinent details to come forward and assist with the case. Montiel-Moreno was held without bond at the Gwinnett County Jail.
