The streets of San Francisco witnessed a sobering reminder of the dangers of drunk driving during last year's holiday season. This reminder came to a close as San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced the conviction of a man for driving under the influence on the iconic Bay Bridge. As per the San Francisco District Attorney's Office, Samuel Joe Candelaria, age 49, was found guilty of multiple charges, including evading police.
On Christmas Day in 2024, California Highway Patrol officers spotted Candelaria speeding and swerving on the Bay Bridge, leading to a twenty-mile pursuit down U.S.-101 South Bound before a blowout forced the Tahoe to stop. Testimony and evidence presented at trial painted a harrowing picture of the chase, with Candelaria's SUV continuing to swerve around other vehicles, at times almost causing a collision. The breath test later administered revealed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.13 percent, significantly higher than the legal limit.
Condemning the actions that might well have led to tragedy, District Attorney Jenkins thanked the jury for their service in this trial, emphasizing the severity of DUI offenses. Such crimes are "unlawful and extremely dangerous", said Jenkins, and she reaffirmed her office's dedication to holding offenders accountable, as cited by the District Attorney's Office.
In a demonstration of legal teamwork, successful prosecution efforts were supported by paralegals Josh Nickchen and Raquel Paz Aleman, with IT assistance from Ada Yu and Noaeh Pinaire.
