A fatal encounter unfolded last night at the Wendy's on 7928 Winchester Road in Southeast Memphis, leaving one man dead and sparking a police investigation. As reported by Action News 5, the Memphis Police Department (MPD) responded to the distressing incident at approximately 5:30 p.m., where they discovered the victim, who, despite being transported to a local hospital in critical condition, succumbed to his injuries.
The authorities have detained a suspect in connection to the shooting, with preliminary findings suggesting that the individual in custody was on familiar terms with the victim. WREG's coverage highlighted that the MPD is urging anyone with further information to contribute to the case by reaching out to CrimeStoppers. The intersection of Winchester and Hacks Cross Road, where the Wendy’s is located, remained cordoned off well into the evening as investigations unfolded.
Fox13 Memphis shed more light on the violent altercation, which appeared to have begun as an argument amongst three Wendy's employees. "Seems like it was a domestic situation that had gone bad," Lt. Col. Gary Badgett of the MPD expressed in an interview cited by Fox13 Memphis. The dispute escalated when two men, now confirmed as Wendy's employees, engaged in a physical confrontation that ultimately led to the shooting.
An eyewitness, Ibian Parker, recounted the harrowing moment to Fox13 Memphis, saying, "When he first got shot, he was screaming," and added, "But after a minute, he just stopped moving." It's been reported by the same source that after the shooting occurred, the suspect entered the restaurant before emerging to perform CPR on the victim. The man who was shot was rushed to Methodist Germantown, where he was pronounced dead. The fast food chain has issued a statement claiming their stores enforce a zero-tolerance policy towards weapons and provide de-escalation training, though the name of the suspect and any charges they might face remain undisclosed at this time.
