A Detroit man sustained injuries this morning after a gunman opened fire inside a Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) bus. The incident, which occurred near Eight Mile Road and Sherwood Street, left the 26-year-old victim with a gunshot wound to the upper chest, reports CBS Detroit. Police have been rigorously scouring the area for the assailant, who is believed to have received a ride after the shooting, discarding a backpack that is currently under examination by the evidence unit.
The Detroit Police Department notes that the altercation took place on the city's east side. According to the narrative, a passenger approached another passenger and fired once, resulting in the victim's serious yet non-lethal injury, as per WXYZ. The suspected shooter is described as a heavy-set Black male in his mid-50s, seen wearing a black baseball cap and white t-shirt at the time of the incident. Police believe the man may have injured his hand while climbing a fence, and was last seen heading west on 8 Mile Road.
Assistant Chief Charles Fitzgerald provided details on the suspect's actions after the shooting, noting that the individual attempted to get rides from two drivers. While the first declined, the second dropped the suspect in the area of Mound and Davison, according to FOX 2 Detroit. Fitzgerald mentioned, "It’s odd that he just stood up, walked toward him, and shot one time," highlighting the seemingly unprovoked nature of the attack. The relationship between the suspect and the victim remains undefined, and there is no clear motive for the shooting thus far.
