Marin County's ongoing battle against the opiate crisis marked a key turning point last week with the arrest of 46-year-old Michael Maffei in Petaluma. The arrest stemmed from a suspected opiate overdose case in San Rafael, which has been under investigation since June. Leading the operation was the Specialized Investigative Unit (SIU), a multi-agency task force comprising detectives from various Marin County law enforcement bodies. Their coordinated efforts led them to identify Maffei as a prime suspect, prompting a Marin County Superior Court Judge to issue a search warrant for his residence.
Last Wednesday, SIU detectives executed the warrant at Maffei’s home on Old Adobe Road. The operation resulted in his arrest without incident. According to the Marin County Sheriff's Office, the search uncovered evidence supporting multiple serious charges. These include furnishing a controlled substance, causing great bodily injury, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Maffei, a convicted felon, now faces a range of narcotics and firearms-related charges. Given the gravity of the allegations and his criminal history, he is currently being held without bail at the Marin County Jail.
