Maui residents and visitors planning to celebrate the Fourth of July should take note: County offices and various services on the island will observe the holiday with closures and modified schedules tomorrow. According to the county's official announcement, all County of Maui offices, pools, and several recycling and landfill services will not operate on the national day of independence.
The announcement detailed that the Lahaina Resource Center at Lahaina Gateway and the Recovery Permit Center at the County of Maui Service Center in Kahului will also be closed. In addition, the Hāna, Molokaʻi, and Lānaʻi landfills will take a day off. However, for the early birds, the Central Maui Landfill and Maui EKO Compost will be available for shortened hours, from 6 a.m. until noon, and Olowalu Recycling & Refuse Convenience Center will be open from 8 a.m. to noon, given those with waste management needs a brief window to get things squared away before the celebrations.
Residents concerned about residential trash pickup and public transportation can be assured that these services will operate on their regular schedules. The Maui Bus system remains a dependable transportation option for both residents and tourists navigating the island during the holiday.
While some may find the reduced county services during the holiday inconvenient, normal hours will resume immediately after the weekend. The county statement said, "Following the holiday closure, regular business hours for County offices and services will resume on Monday, July 7." Residents planning to use county services are advised to adjust their schedules and plan ahead to accommodate the temporary closure.
