Maumee is gearing up to celebrate the opening of a new interchange at Interstate 475 and U.S. 20A with a public event scheduled for August 4. According to the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), the event will kick off at 2 p.m. on the east side of the interchange, near Spartan Chemical. ODOT officials, alongside local dignitaries and business representatives, will be present to speak on how the new interchange is expected to significantly improve local logistics.
For those planning to attend, ODOT warns that U.S. 20A will be off limits between Ford Street and Briarfield Boulevard on the day of the event—save for local business access. Attendees might have to park on either side of U.S. 20A near the bridge and walk from there, with ODOT staff set to direct people to parking spots. The interchange itself, featuring an advanced design dubbed a diverging diamond interchange (DDI), is slated to open for traffic later that week, marking a new chapter in the region's transportation network.
Prior to this upgrade, U.S. 20A simply overpassed I-475. The new DDI is touted as the latest in traffic engineering design, seeking to streamline vehicle flow and enhance safety. "We're adding a new highway asset -- a new interchange of the most modern design currently available in traffic engineering," said Pat McColley, ODOT's District 2 deputy director, in a statement obtained by ODOT's news release. This marks the second DDI in northwest Ohio, with the first having opened in 2017 at I-475 and State Route 25 in Perrysburg.
This ambitious project, which began back in 2022, didn't merely construct a new interchange; it also widened about five miles of I-475 between U.S. 24 and Airport Highway, replaced both the bridges over the Norfolk Southern Railroad and over Monclova Road, and resurfaced roughly three miles of U.S. 24 from Waterville-Monclova Road to just east of the interchange. These extensive improvements are set to not only enhance local traffic flow but also to transform the area's commercial and logistical capabilities potentially.
