Residents of McNairy County, take heed, as a new phishing scam is making rounds, feigning to be a "Final Notice" from the Tennessee Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The deceptive message is threatening the suspension of driver's licenses due to unpaid tickets. The McNairy County Sheriff's Office took to social media to warn citizens about the fraudulent scheme. In their post, the sheriff's office advised, "If you’ve received a message like this claiming to be a “Final Notice” from the Tennessee DMV about unpaid tickets and license suspension—DO NOT click the link and DO NOT respond."
It's important to understand the true markings of a legitimate government communication. The sheriff's office sheds light on how to spot the fakes: "✅ Real government websites end in .gov, not weird combinations like .gov-nopd.icu." In addition, they confirmed that the DMV wouldn't dispatch such threats through text messages with questionable links. For those who might have already received such texts, the advised course of action is to verify with the actual state DMV site or dial them directly, instead of engaging with the suspicious message.
The Facebook post concluded with a community-minded call to action: "Stay alert and share this to protect your friends and family! 🙅♂️🔒 #ScamAlert #PhishingScam #DMVScam #TennesseeDMV #OnlineSafety."
