In a recent development that underscores the ongoing adjustments in the healthcare sector, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare has announced a reduction in its workforce by about 1%. A restructuring plan, titled the PATH — Planning, Alignment, Transformational and High Performance — Forward, is set in motion, which will involve laying off around 161 employees to "meet the evolving healthcare needs of the population it serves." Local Memphis reported that the restructuring includes consolidating Obstetric services from Methodist South to other locations due to a drastic decline in birth volumes.

According to a press release published by FOX13 Memphis, Methodist South Hospital, which currently averages only 1.3 births per day, will see its Labor & Delivery services merged with Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown and Methodist Olive Branch Hospitals effective August 1. This decision follows a 43% decline in deliveries within the past five years in the Methodist South service area. Impacted associates who fail to secure new roles within the organization will be offered severance and career transition support. However, Methodist South's emergency department will continue providing necessary obstetrics-related emergency care.

“As part of our mission to serve the entire community, we regularly examine our service offerings and processes to ensure that they align with community needs and follow best clinical practices in a rapidly changing healthcare environment,” Methodist president and CEO Michael Ugwueke said in the restructuring announcement, also emphasizing the system’s commitment to the Memphis area, according to FOX 13 Memphis.

Additionally, Monica Wharton, Executive Vice President and COO, indicated that the layoffs are happening at various Methodist locations, designed to reflect the specific needs of each location and the communities they serve. While 80 of the affected employees are expected to find new positions within the system, others who are unable to do so are being offered severance pay and career transition support, as detailed by Becker's Hospital Review. The PATH Forward plan intends to streamline operations to sustain long-term strength and high-quality services through these strategic measures.

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare is implementing changes in service delivery and staffing as part of its efforts to adapt to patient volumes and operational needs in the Memphis healthcare market.
