In a pragmatic move to cater to the growing number of electric vehicle (EV) drivers, the City of Mesquite has introduced a third EV charging station, this time at 1616 N. Galloway. As reported by the City of Mesquite, the addition has been possible thanks to a significant sum of $182,880 awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy under the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Voucher Rebate Program. This leap towards sustainability does not only involve the establishment of the new station but also the acquisition of three electric vehicles for City use.
It isn't Mesquite's first rodeo in the realm of EV support. The city's initial commitment to the environment and technological growth began back in 2023, when two earlier charging stations rolled out. This expansion was courtesy of a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation, targeting congestion and air quality. To accommodate the increasing EV traffic, the three dual-port Level II EV chargers now stand, ready to service the city's residents and visitors.
The strategy appears to have been calculated to strike a balance between accessibility and cost-effectiveness. Presently, the charging stations operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and users are encouraged to take advantage of the relatively reasonable rate of 30 cents per kWh. This charge isn't just a number pulled from thin air; it's a carefully considered figure that comes in at 21 cents below the state average, based on findings in Stable Auto's 2024 report.
