Miami-Dade County has greenlighted the creation of a new animal shelter in South Dade, an effort led by Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez and supported by Mayor Daniella Levine Cava as an initiative to improve living conditions for both animals and people. The new facility, poised to replace the existing overflow shelter in Medley, will allow for expanded capacity and enhanced conditions for the animals and staff who work tirelessly on their behalf. Mayor Levine Cava praised the project, describing the new adoption center as more than just a shelter, but a reflection of the community's core values. She emphasized that the initiative represents a tangible commitment by the County to both animal welfare and addressing urgent housing needs, according to Miami-Dade County's press release.

The exchange agreement enabling this project involves Miami-Dade County and Unicapital Medley QOZB LLC. The County will swap the land of the existing Medley shelter for a parcel at 29500 Harriet Tubman Highway in South Dade, where a 25,000-square-foot facility will be constructed. This real estate quid pro quo serves more than just the furry residents; the Medley property will transition into a space for at least 100 income-restricted apartments. In a statement obtained by the Miami-Dade County press release, Annette Jose, Director of Miami-Dade County Animal Services, expressed excitement over the prospect of a new, air-conditioned facility for a safer and more comfortable environment for the animals.

The investment for the modern shelter stands at an estimated $11.5 million. In addition to upgraded kennels and medical suites, the site is set to feature spacious play yards and an adoption center. Notably, the new shelter will also take over hosting the County's spay and neuter clinic, which is currently located at the South Dade Government Center. Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins, whose district will house the new shelter, stated, “I’m proud to welcome this state-of-the-art animal shelter to South Dade. It reflects our commitment to compassionate animal care, smart investment, and bringing vital services closer to the families and pets who call this community home,” in a conversation with Miami-Dade County.

Construction of the new shelter is anticipated to start following the final approvals, with an expected completion date in September 2027. Miami-Dade County Animal Services annually provides care for nearly 15,000 animals, facilitating adoptions and offering vaccination and sterilization services, as reported in the County's press release.
