Michael Handoga has stepped up as the municipality's next Fire Chief after the department bid farewell to the retiring Chief Jeffrey Parks. This shift in leadership comes with a notable track record, as Handoga, a Countryside High School grad, packs more than 23 years of experience in fire service into his new role as he takes the helm on August 20.
Handoga's career has been a veritable climb through the ranks, beginning at the St. Pete Beach Fire Department where he ascended to the position of lieutenant, then, onto Largo Fire Rescue as Training Chief and Assistant Fire Marshal. His journey with Dunedin Fire Rescue began in 2016 when he was appointed Deputy Fire Marshal, a role that saw him promoted to Fire Marshal the next year, according to the City's official announcement. His service, punctuated by overseeing key initiatives such as the Fenway project, the renovation of Dunedin Stadium, and the erection of City Hall, went on to further his leadership scope as Deputy Fire Chief of Operations whilst leading the Fire Prevention Division since 2020.
