In a remarkable medical advancement within Michigan's healthcare scene, a new non-invasive brain procedure has demonstrated life-altering results for patients grappling with debilitating tremors. Jayne Dusendang, a former ICU nurse at Corewell Health's Butterworth Hospital, underwent focused ultrasound surgery that targets and alleviates essential tremors, as well as tremors predominant in Parkinson's disease, without the need for incisions or anesthesia.
"This procedure is different than the typical idea of brain surgery," Dr. Luyuan Li, who performed the procedure, explained in a statement obtained by WZZM13. Dusendang's decision to opt for the surgery stemmed from an incident where she became embarrassingly aware of her need for a change after spilling food on herself during a dinner with family—a moment she recounted to WOODTV.
The sound waves used in this innovative approach create precise lesions in the brain responsible for tremors. The treatment has not only allowed Dusendang to regain control over her right hand immediately but has also vastly improved her quality of life. "I like to watercolor. I like to do all sorts of things. And it's so much easier now, with my right hand working and being calm," she shared in a report by FOX 17.
Patient experiences have so far been positive, with most being able to see tremor improvements or disappearance almost instantly. "After we make a lesion there, patients should see the tremor improve or be gone instantly," confirmed Dr. Li, as reported by WZZM13. Dusendang has now set her sights on undergoing the same treatment on her left side after a 9-month recovery period, though she's currently taking time to appreciate newfound abilities like writing a letter to her high school friend, an activity she hadn’t enjoyed in years.
Corewell Health is the first healthcare institution in Michigan to offer this form of incisionless brain surgery, marking a significant stride in the treatment options available for those burdened by essential and Parkinson's-related tremors.
