Tragedy struck the city of Middletown yesterday afternoon, in an act of domestic violence that turned fatal and would later involve local police in a lethal exchange. According to a social media post by the Middletown Division of Police, officers were dispatched to a home in the 3000 block of Mohawk Street yesterday around 4:42 p.m. Upon their arrival, while attempting to negotiate with a male suspect, shots were fired in both directions between him and law enforcement.
The standoff ended with both the suspect and his wife pronounced dead at the scene. As per the Middletown Division of Police post provided by media contact Clayton Castle, "Upon entering the residence, officers discovered both the male and female subjects deceased inside." The male had reportedly wounded his spouse with a gunshot before the officers' arrival. As is typical in such cases, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations has taken the lead on the officer-involved shooting investigation, relieved local officers of the burden of probing too close to home.
The specifics of the negotiation and what precipitated the suspect's initial gunshot wound to his wife remain unclear. Middletown Police, though, have stressed that the incident is under intense review, keeping both the sanctity of procedure and the harrowing nature of domestic strife at fore. As part of the investigative process, any information from the public can aid and is encouraged, with individuals asked to reach out to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations at either 855-224-6446 or 740-845-2000.
