Minneapolis residents can brace for a battering of rain and potentially severe weather today, with forecasters at the National Weather Service Twin Cities/Chanhassen MN predicting heavy rain and gusty winds. In a forecast released this morning, a high near 82 degrees coupled with showers and thunderstorms before 3 pm is expected, having a 70% chance of precipitation with possible higher amounts in thunderstorms.
Despite the tumultuous conditions set for today, the weather outlook seems more favorable for Sunday through Friday. The National Weather Service in their Hazardous Weather Outlook noted no hazardous weather expected during this time, providing some reprieve after today's storms. With southwesterly winds easing into a northern direction later in the day, the potential for severe weather diminishes, giving way to clearer skies in the evening.
However, the aftermath of recent weather patterns has led to extended flood warnings in the region. The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for multiple rivers in Minnesota, including the South Fork Crow River below Mayer and Minnesota River at various points. Falling under this warning are the counties of Carver, Nicollet, Blue Earth, Brown, Chippewa, Renville, Yellow Medicine, and others. Particularly, the Crow River at Rockford is experiencing "minor flooding" with river levels expected to crest overnight.
Citizens in affected areas are advised to be cautious, especially when close to riverbanks or encountering flooded roads. According to the flood statement, "Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles." The warning also advises that low-lying areas and some roads along the Crow River will begin to flood when the stage reaches 10 feet. Currently, at a stage of 10.7 feet as per the last observation, the river is expected to fall below the flood stage by early Wednesday, marking a gradual recession of the water levels.
For the upcoming week, aside from a relatively sunny Sunday, the forecast anticipates sporadic rain chances ranging from 20 to 50 percent through next Friday. Temperatures will remain consistent with highs in the low to mid-80s and lows in the mid-60s. As always, residents should stay updated on the latest weather conditions and take any necessary precautions to ensure their safety and well-being during this period of unstable weather.
