Minneapolis residents are facing a sweltering day ahead, with the National Weather Service forecasting a high near 90 degrees and heat index values soaring as high as 99. While the south southwest winds may offer a slight reprieve at 5 to 10 mph, humidity is set to contribute to potentially hazardous conditions. The combination of heat and moisture also sets the stage for a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, particularly after 10 am today.
In accordance with the Heat Advisory issued by the National Weather Service, the bureau advises "Hot temperatures, and high humidity may cause heat illnesses." Residents are cautioned to drink ample fluids, stay in cooled indoor spaces, remain out of the sun, and to look after those who might be particularly vulnerable to the heat. The advisory is slated to remain in effect from noon to 8 PM CDT this evening for multiple areas, including central, east central, south central, and southeast Minnesota, as well as west central Wisconsin.
Moving into the night, the chance for precipitation increases to 70%, with potential overnight thunderstorms. The recent weather outlook also hints at quieter conditions for Thursday and Friday, followed by rising temperatures over the weekend. But as high as tonight's anticipated storms may be, they mark a precursor to a weather pattern that suggests further chances for showers and thunderstorms from Saturday into next week.
The Hazardous Weather Outlook stresses the need for precaution, especially today and later in the night, as some of the potential storms "have a chance to become strong, or severe." Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and to tune in to local weather updates for rapid developments. Local SKYWARN spotter activation may also be required, demonstrating the potential severity of the weather conditions facing the region.
