Prepare to hear some serious honking come July 31, because Minneapolis is throwing what could be the loudest parade in its history. According to an announcement by the City of Minneapolis, Nicollet Mall will play host to "Minneapolis Moves: The Big Honking Truck Parade." It's set to be an impressive display featuring a plethora of municipal and local business vehicles, including everything from fire engines and snowplows to semis and construction rigs. Mayor Jacob Frey said, "From fire engines to snowplows, residents of all ages know that Minneapolis is the best trucking city ever!"
The idea, originating from Mayor Frey's Downtown Action Plan, aims to quickly bring families downtown and pump some energy into the city center. The procession will start at East Grant Street at around 5:30 p.m., make its way down Nicollet Mall, and conclude at South Sixth Street. Post-parade, vehicles will park for photo opportunities till 8 p.m. Sure, it's a chance to see big trucks up close, but it's also about connecting the community with the city's services and the workers who keep Minneapolis running.
Leading the charge as grand marshals will be the Wolf brothers, eight-year-old Felix and 11-year-old Henry. They earned this honor after their family expressed their whole-hearted appreciation for municipal vehicles during the city's Doors Open event this spring. Their mother, Amanda Nix, shared her children's excitement in a statement released by the City of Minneapolis, "We’re a family that loves to learn, explore and tinker. The boys, especially Felix, have always been fascinated with how all the specialized trucks operate and how they do the work for the City. They’re thrilled to lead this parade, which is sure to be a highlight of the summer for our family."
But don't think trucks are the only attraction. Nicollet Mall is also setting the stage for Mich’s Makers’ Market from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., where visitors can shop at over 30 local businesses. The Lofton Hotel will be getting into the spirit as well, whipping up four special ice cream flavors just for the event, punnily dubbed with names like “Street Sweeper S’mores” and “Ladder Up Lemon & Tangerine Sorbet.” "This is a fun night to bring the family downtown to celebrate all things Minneapolis – from the sights and sounds of the parade, to the delicious food and hometown gifts," said Lisa Goodman, director of strategic initiatives for the City of Minneapolis.
So, if you want to check out some big wheels and score some unique local goods, Nicollet Mall is clearly the place to be on July 31. Just remember to bring your earplugs—because this parade is built to be heard as well as seen.
