As the temperatures continue to soar this summer, the Mint Hill Fire Department has issued a critical public safety advisory concerning the impending heatwave. According to a social media post, the town is set to experience an intense stretch of heat, with temperatures climbing to 100 degrees and heat indices even higher.
The fire department's message, while highlighting the need for hydration, imparts a couple of vital tips for dealing with the heat. "Hydrate means more than just drinking water, ensure thT you are adding electrolytes to your drink either through powder or caffeine-free sports drinks," their post suggests, with an important caveat, "adequate hydration has to start at least 24 hours prior to periods of heavy sweating." For those not normally spending time outdoors, the fire department recommends avoiding long stretches outside during the critical heat hours of 10am - 6pm, as per the Mint Hill Fire Department.
Alongside personal safety, the safety of the community remains a top concern, especially for the vulnerable. The advisory from the Mint Hill Fire Department urges the community to be vigilant and monitor those at risk, particularly individuals without the luxury of air conditioning. "If you have friends, neighbors, or family members who are compromised in any fashion please check on them frequently during this time period," the post reads, emphasizing the importance of communal care.
In preparation for the sweltering conditions expected over the next several days, the advisory suggests slowing down and making suitable arrangements to cope with the heat.
