The Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office announced that 30-year-old Gordon Massey of Modesto has been sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of serving up to 35 years. A jury found him guilty of several charges, including premeditated attempted murder of a police officer, assaulting a police officer with a semi-automatic weapon, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possessing methamphetamine while armed, as reported by the Stanislaus County District Attorney.

A statement from the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s says the incident began on the night of June 3, 2023. Massey was riding a bicycle when Modesto Police Officer Raihil Sharma approached him. Massey, who had multiple warrants, tried to flee, prompting a pursuit.

According to the Stanislaus County District Attorney on their Facebook page, Massey was arrested after shooting at Officer Sharma during a chase in a residential neighborhood. He struck the officer’s car twice, with one bullet hitting the passenger seat headrest. Officer Sharma returned fire and shot Massey in the arm. The Modesto Police Department launched an investigation, and the case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Patrick Hogan. Massey, a parolee and convicted felon, used a stolen handgun, which led to additional charges. For more information, the public was directed to the District Attorney’s office.
