The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is reaching out to the public, seeking input on the state's high-priority transportation needs that currently lack funding, as detailed in a recent announcement. In an effort to update the Long-Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) and State Freight and Rail Plan (SFRP), MoDOT has outlined a draft High-Priority Unfunded Needs listing, pinpointing $1.1 billion a year in essential transportation needs awaiting funds.
Residents are invited to attend a meeting on August 11, from 4-6 p.m. at The Lodge in Des Peres, where they can review this draft list, the inner workings of the LRTP, and SFRP updates, however it's worth noting, the draft highlights $4.7 billion worth of high-priority road and bridge needs that remain unfunded and these are sorted into three categorical tiers based upon their urgency and the accuracy of their cost estimates, acting as a guide to integrate these needs into funded projects as state and federal funds roll in over time.
Feedback is crucial to the project's trajectory, therefore the public's opinions on what should take precedence and ideas on potential future funding opportunities are encouraged; presentation materials and a comment form are also accessible for those interested on MoDOT's webpage. According to the draft laid out by MoDOT, Tier One projects, valued at $525 million, are positioned to be addressed within the existing five-year Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) should funding levels rise, Tier Two, estimated at $2.2 billion, extend beyond the present STIP and are expected to have a broader estimate range, and Tier Three projects, accounting for another $2.0 billion, also exceed the time frame of the current STIP, marked by even broader estimates.
Furthermore, MoDOT has identified another $1 billion in multimodal needs, which fall outside traditional road and bridge expectations, the developmental process for this list was a collective effort which included input from regional planning partners across the state, and as a positive note MoDOT has already shifted 24 needs totaling $321 million from the unfunded needs list to the STIP for fiscal years 2026 through 2030, which was finalized in July; displaying progress as the department actively works to bridge the gap between today's fiscal limitations and tomorrow's infrastructural necessities.
