Montgomery County Council is on the lookout for a new member to join its Human Trafficking Prevention Committee, as announced in a recent call for applicants. The chosen individual will serve as the County Council’s designee, filling a term that started on November 1, 2023, and will conclude at the end of October 2026. The deadline for applications is August 25 by 5 p.m., giving interested community members a month to throw their hat in the ring.
Since its inception in 2017, the committee has been staffed with 17 voting members and up to 10 nonvoting ex officio members. Applicants must either live in or be employed within the County and are expected to hold a position with an organization that tackles aspects of human trafficking or have a vested interest in related issues. According to the Montgomery County Council, "A voting member must not serve more than two consecutive full terms and must not engage in any advocacy activity at the state or federal levels unless that activity is approved by the Office of Intergovernmental Relations."
Each voting member's commitment to the committee spans three years, though they aren't financially compensated. Instead, they may be reimbursed for mileage and can claim dependent care costs, courtesy of the County's established rates. The frequency of meetings is determined by the duties required to be performed, with a minimum of six gatherings held annually.
Diversity is a cornerstone of the committee's composition—aiming to mirror Montgomery County's mosaic of races, ethnicities, origins, socioeconomic statuses, genders, sexual orientations, religious beliefs, disabilities, and geographical distribution. Prospective members are encouraged to email a cover letter and a four-page max resume detailing their experience to [email protected], addressed to Council President Stewart. Alternatively, they can mail it to the County Council Office.
