Tempe's Loop 202 eastbound lanes, a well-traveled portion of the Arizona highway system, were temporarily closed due to a multi-car accident late Tuesday as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix. Commuters faced delays as emergency services responded to the scene near Priest Drive. Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) confirmed that six vehicles were involved in the collision which occurred at approximately 6:20 p.m.
The impact of the collision was significant, culminating in five people being transported to local hospitals, with one individual suffering from life-threatening injuries. "Five people have been transported to the hospital. One of them has life threatening injuries," DPS said. The eastbound traffic lanes became impassable for several hours, creating congestion as the ensuing investigation and clean-up commenced.
After a closure that lasted around three hours, the lanes were reopened around 9 p.m., easing the traffic disruption caused by the incident. This development provided some relief to drivers who had been detoured or delayed by the accident.
While the eastbound section of Loop 202 has since been reopened, the details surrounding the cause of the accident remained uncertain. Detectives continued their investigation to determine what led to this multi-car crash, according to a statement obtained by AZFamily. As the investigation progresses, it remains critical for those traversing the Valley's highways to remain vigilant and cautious on the roadways, particularly in the wake of such incidents that serve as stark reminders of the fragility inherent in our daily commutes.
