In Nashville, vehicle owners might want to double-check their doors are locked, as guns are increasingly being lifted from their cars. According to the Nashville Police Department, a staggering 74% of all guns reported stolen in Davidson County this year were snatched from vehicles. Put into perspective, that's 506 firearms taken from cars out of the 680 total guns stolen so far in 2025.
This issue doesn't seem to be losing any steam; last year, around the same time, 422 guns had already been stolen from vehicles. In an effort to tackle the theft of vehicles and the associated crimes, MNPD rolled out a special initiative in February 2024. The campaign has so far resulted in 1,323 arrests and led to the recovery of 727 stolen vehicles and 332 guns. However, the dilemma remains as guns pilfered from automobiles often end up in the hands of those committing carjackings and robberies.
Statistics portray a concerning trend with the sheer volume of firearms circulating in the criminal underworld, originating from a place as mundane as an unlocked car. The police department's advice to Nashvillians is clear: lock your cars, secure your valuables, and always remove the keys. The simple act of securing a vehicle can be the barrier that stops a gun from falling into the wrong hands.
