The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has put a new face on State Route 80 with the completion of a modern bridge over the San Pedro River in St. David. A $9.7 million investment has resulted in a 428-foot-long structure designed to link communities in Southeastern Arizona for decades to come. According to details shared on the department's website, ADOT's announcement, the bridge is planned to serve the needs of the region for 75 years, replacing the previous bridge that has stood since 1960.
The new bridge will be a boon to nearly 6,000 vehicles that traverse this route daily, including those heading to popular tourist destinations like Tombstone and Bisbee. Construction aimed to minimize inconvenience by maintaining a single lane of traffic flow, thus avoiding major delays. Despite the careful planning, some work, including final striping, remains and is expected to continue through early August.
The SR 80 San Pedro Bridge comes as part of ADOT’s broader vision to protect Arizona’s investment in its highways and bridges. The funding reflects a collaborative effort, with most money coming from the federal Surface Transportation Block Grant Program, complemented by state matching funds. This development was part of ADOT’s updated five-year construction program, which schedules and prioritizes transportation projects across the state.
