The National Weather Service in New Orleans has issued an extreme heat warning for the region, predicting heat index values that could soar up to a sweltering 114 degrees. This warning, which encompasses both southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi, remains in effect from 11 AM to 7 PM CDT today, as per NWS. As these areas brace for the searing temperatures, local residents are advised to take necessary precautions.
During times of such intense heat, the risk for heat-related illnesses surges, making it critical for individuals to stay hydrated and in air-conditioned environments. The NWS cautions, "Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors." Moreover, the weather outlook for the coming days doesn't offer much respite, with a series of showers and thunderstorms likely, accompanied by high temperatures that will barely dip below the 90s.
For those who must be outdoors, the NWS underscores the importance of taking frequent breaks and wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. "Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events," they warn. Today's forecast also includes a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3 PM, potentially tempering the heat with a slight cool down, albeit bringing its own set of challenges with precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
As the week progresses, the potential for inclement weather continues. Tomorrow and Thursday both have a high likelihood of showers and thunderstorms, with an 80 to 90 percent chance respectively. Nights are expected to bring some relief as temps are forecasted to fall to around 79 degrees, but residents should still remain cautious. "Stay cool, stay hydrated, stay informed," the NWS extreme heat warning advises, emphasizing the three pillars for enduring such extreme weather conditions. With consistent winds from the west around 5 mph, conditions are likely to feel muggy and oppressive, offering little respite from the humidity that hangs heavy in the air.
