If you're planning to tackle a roofing project in Oklahoma City, you'll need to keep some new regulations in mind. According to an update from the City of Oklahoma City's official website, beginning on Friday, August 1, all projects involving the removal, repair, or replacement of roofs on single-family homes and duplexes within city limits will require a roofing permit. This ordinance, which was adopted by the Oklahoma City Council on June 17, aims to add a level of oversight to these types of construction activities.

Oklahoma City's Development Services Director, Brock Rowe, emphasized the necessity of this ordinance given the frequency of severe weather hitting the area. With the contractors as well as property owners affected, he stated, "This ordinance establishes vital oversight of roofing operations within Oklahoma City," and as reported by the City of Oklahoma City news post, "it is critical that we protect homeowners, especially during times of crisis, by ensuring work is done safely, professionally, and in full compliance with code."

For those needing to secure a permit, the city has streamlined the process. Applications can be submitted online or in person at the City's Business Center located at 420 W. Main St. Permits are set with a fee of $94.50 and are usually issued on the same day of application. After obtaining the permit and the requisite inspection list, requests for an inspection can be completed online, through text, or an automated phone system.

City inspectors will perform checks on numerous aspects of the roofing work. Following online requests or via text, they'll take a look into the roof condition, flashing, drainage, installation, compliance, and more, to ensure that all work is up to code.
